Bangladesh defeated Pakistan by 10 wickets in the first Test of the two-match series which was played at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Sunday.
Chasing the 30-run target after bowling Pakistan out for 148 runs during their second innings, the visitors had no trouble as Zakir Hasan (15) and Shadman Islam (9) guided the visitors to the target in just 6.3 overs.
This was the first time Bangladesh defeated Pakistan in a Test match as the previous 13 meetings between the two sides ended in 12 victories for Pakistan and one match was drawn.
Before the Pindi Test, Pakistan and Bangladesh has played 13 Test matches with 12 won by Pakistan and one drawn.
The Bangladesh cricket team brought much-needed respite back home with a historic result in Test cricket. As the country looks to pull itself out of political chaos, its men’s cricket team sent a wave of jubilation back home by securing its first-ever victory against Pakistan in Test cricket. Bangladesh and Pakistan have squared off in a total of 13 matches in the longest format of the game, with 12 of them resulting in a loss for the Bangla Tigers, while one ended in a draw.
The opening Test of the 2-match series in Rawalpindi, however, produced a first for Bangladesh, who secured a 10-wicket victory.
Bangladesh led by Shadman Islam (93), Mominul Haque (50) and a brilliant partnership from Mushfiqur Rahim (191) and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (77) took their team past the Pakistan total and had a 117-run lead.
In its second innings, Pakistan were in a state of bother losing 2 wickets with the score at 28. But it was not over for Pakistan batsmen. Pakistan lost wickets at regular intervals with Bangladesh bowlers tightening the noose. Once again Mohammad Rizwan (51) scored a lone knock. Pakistan lost 8 wickets for just 80 runs. Pakistan were bundled out for 146.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz (4 for 21) and Shakib Al Hasan (3 for 44) were the main takers for Bangladesh.
Bangladesh openers chased down the target of 30 easily to register their first Test win against Pakistan.
Pakistan and Bangladesh first went head to head in a Test match back in 2001 during the Asian Test Championship which also included Sri Lanka. The Lankans emerged victorious from the tri-series.
Pakistan and Bangladesh took on each other in a bilateral series for the first time in 2002, with the former winning 2-0.
On August 25, 2024, Bangladesh finally secured their first-ever triumph against Pakistan in the longest format of the game.
In recent years, the gap between the two teams has narrowed somewhat, with Bangladesh improving as a Test-playing nation. While Pakistan still hold the upper hand, Bangladesh’s performances have shown more fight and resilience. The 2021 series in Bangladesh, where Pakistan won both matches, saw Bangladesh putting up a decent fight, especially in the second Test in Dhaka, where they managed to push the game into the fifth day.
